Hummer had its start with AM General Corporation, which was at one time the military, and government vehicle division of American Motors located in South Bend, Indiana. There were plans even in the 1980’s to create a civilian version of this off road sports vehicle; however, the dream did not materialize until 1992.
The public’s attention to this unique all terrain vehicles was peaked in 1990 when two matching white hummers were driven over the rough roads of the Soviet Union from London to Beijing. The Hummers had no problems at all with the rough roads as they were built to drive on off road terrain. The major points of the journey were broadcast in the United States on ESPN. Within a year, the United States public was awed by the Hummer once again with their die-hard performance in Operation: Desert Storm.
Finally, a civilian version of the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle known as the HMMWV or Hum-Vee was created in 1992. The brand name for this civilian version was called “Hummer.” Rumor has it we can thank Arnold Schwarzenegger for this civilian version as he asked AM to build a version for the general public after he watched a convoy of HMMWV’s drive past during the filming Kindergarten Cop in 1990.
General Motors bought the brand name from AM General in 1998, however, AM was still hard at work building this unique off road terrain vehicles. General Motors, on the other hand is in charge of the marketing and distribution of all the Hummers that are created by AM General.
Throughout the next few years, GM created their own Hummers, the H2, and H3. At this time, they renamed the original Hummer H1. AM General at this time is still manufacturing the H1 and General Motors has contracted AM General to build the H2. On the other hand, the H3 is being built in Shreveport, Louisiana in the same plant with the Chevrolet Colorado and the General Motors Corporation Canyon pickup trucks.
The Hummer went international in 2006 with a few select importers and distributors in Europe along with a few other markets.
